Temperatures yesterday soared in many parts of Japan, with the mercury topping 35 degree Celsius at 176 locations. The heat wave killed at least 6 people and hospitalized nearly 2,000 others.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the day's high exceeded 38 degree Celsius in western and central regions including Ibigawa, Gifu Prefecture, Kyoto and Higashiomi. Over the next few days, the extreme heat may result in temperatures as high as 40 degree Celsius in some regions.
The agency is urging people to avoid heat stroke by taking such measures as frequently drinking water and consuming food or drink with adequate amounts of salt.
