VTV.vn - Monday, 21 September is set to be a notable trading session for Vietnam’s stock market. The market is set to receive a new wave of passive foreign investment following Vietnam’s reclassification as a Secondary Emerging Market by FTSE Russell.

Under FTSE Russell’s roadmap, Vietnamese stocks will be added to global indexes in four stages, with weightings of 10 percent in September 2026, 20 percent in March 2027, and 35 percent in each of the final two phases in June and September 2027.

Phasing the allocation in over several stages, rather than including the full weighting from the outset, is an approach FTSE has also used in previous market upgrades.

According to SSI estimates, the first round of buying by funds tracking the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS) could generate net inflows of around US$240 million. The initial allocation is expected to focus on 27 Vietnamese stocks, ahead of the new indexes officially taking effect on Monday.
