Co-operation in politics and security is regarded as the foundation of the bloc's development. In the following report, let's review the achievements of the ASEAN Community in this sector.
Since the establishment of the ASEAN Community, the 10 member countries have implemented 141 among 290 actions as part of the politics-security pillar. In addition, 2016 witnessed efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region. The bloc's position in the world has been also improved. Specifically, ASEAN has built strategic partnerships with 7 of 11 partners.
Vu Ho, Deputy Head, ASEAN Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: ASEAN co-operation in 2016 focused on enhancing solidarity through coping with internal issues in each country, ensuring peace and security through resolving regional security challenges, and boosting co-operation with other partners.
In 2016, ASEAN continued showing its role in resolving security issues including those in the East Sea. East Sea issues were mentioned in all ASEAN meetings. ASEAN confirmed its viewpoint to resolve those issues by peaceful methods, in accordance with international laws including the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea while striving to achieve East Sea code of conduct.
Among ASEAN, Vietnam has been an active and responsible member, contributing to the achievements of the bloc.
