Hosted by the Vietnam Young Drukpa Association with the approval of his holiness Gyalwang Drukpa, the spiritual leader of the Drukpa Lineage, the event was held to mark World Environment Day on June 5.
Festival season, despite it many merits, can tend to generate a huge amount of waste. However, last Sunday the Tay Thien Buddhist Temple witnessed a special ceremony, where instead of the usual spiritual tourism activities, nuns, Buddhists, and young people took part in a walk to collect trash along a 5-km stretch.
For youngsters like Tran Quoc Bao, a bank employee and member of the Vietnam Young Drukpa Association, this was a truly rewarding experience.
The “Green Sunday” project was launched by the India-headquartered Young Drukpa Association International, and since then has continuously become more and more popular around the world, including Vietnam. The event was inspired by His Holiness Gyalwang Drukpa’s global pilgrimages, and carries with it a message of environmental protection which has been spread to the four corners of the world.
At the end of the day, these full garbage sacks were gathered at a common location.
There are still other places heavily littered with garbage, as well as a lot of trees to be planted.
These activities will be carried out by members of the YDA. Their love for Mother Nature and their work with young members of society will help them make a significant difference in changing people's attitudes and protecting the environment.
