Through regular inspection, many shortcomings have been resolved, but there remains several outstanding issues to be dealt with. What are the solutions for the remaining mud waste and the amount of waste released every day? What if the waste cannot be treated? Where is the waste stored? These are the questions raised in a meeting with Formosa Ha Tinh representative on Tuesday afternoon to find solutions for the waste mud which still hasn’t been treated.
Le Dinh Son, Chairman, Ha Tinh Province People’s Committee said: "The plan to treat industrial waste already exists, dating back to before Formosa operated in Vietnam. Therefore, we can’t discuss its capacity".
Chen Yuan Cheng, Chairman of Formosa Ha Tinh said: "We have found a contractor, which is the Nghi Sơn Company. We’re still investigating and finding new ways to treat the remaining waste mud".
The waste mud is growing. This requires an immediate solution to address this problem. Therefore, in the meeting, Ha Tinh’s authorities required Formosa to adopt a solution to deal with the escalating problem. Being unable to find the company to handle the waste is no longer accepted as an excuse for inaction.
Le Dinh Son, Chairman of Tinh Province People’s Committee said: "In the operation process, there must be predictions about the potential minor effects that activity will have on the environment. And these activities should be stopped even though they still haven’t caused any major environmental damage".
Ha Tinh has required the company to hire an independent firm which meets international standards to monitor the whole of Formosa's waste discharge system.
