This conference is part of the implementation of the Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s direction of closing forests in the region to prevent loggers.
Companies in recent years have used import-export companies to legalise their documents and receipts to transport illegal timber to Vietnam over recent years. Collaboration between related agencies has also been criticised as being too weak. Local leaders have also raised issues with forest management practices and forest protection in the area. Many loggers are taking advantage of holes in the law to abuse forests to transport timber illegally. More efforts need to be done to improve the supervision and prevention of timber smuggling through borders.
