VTV.vn - A flag pole to mark national sovereignty was inaugurated on Phu Quy Island in the south central coastal province of Binh Thuan on August 12.

The concrete pole is 22.6 metres tall with its main side facing the sea. It carries a flag measuring 4 metres by 6 metres. The construction, which commenced on June 17, was funded by the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV). The pole is one of seven sovereignty flag poles built on outpost islands from north to south by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the Association of Vietnamese Students and the BIDV.

Phu Quy island district is approximately 104 kilometres from Binh Thuan’s Phan Thiet city and has a population of 27,000. Other islands housing similar poles are Tran in Quang Ninh province, Bach Long Vi in Hai Phong city, Hon La in Quang Binh province, Cu Lao Xanh in Binh Dinh province, Con Son in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province and Tho Chu in Kien Giang province.
