The scheme aims at improving rice quality while promoting exports by increasing value and enhancing sustainable development. Rice in the Mekong Delta will target high-end segments in domestic and international markets. Meanwhile, the Red River Delta will focus on typical local rice and sticky rice production. Midlands and mountainous areas will minimise rice farming areas, producing only enough to meet local demand.
While rice export totals in 2016 might fail to reach their targets and the agriculture sector is experiencing less growth compared with previous years, the plan is intended to improve Vietnamese rice production.
