The rezoning of farming land has been raised as a possible solution to harsh climatic conditions. According to this proposal, areas with adequate water supply will be earmarked to planting rice, while others without sufficient water resources will be switched to other crops or non-agricultural use.
My Chau Commune in Binh Dinh Province is scheduled not to cultivate rice in the coming Summer-Autumn season due to an absence of water.
Over 50ha of the rice farming land will be converted to other crops, or left fallow. Farmers say that they will be affected, and are preparing for the situation.
After providing water for the winter-spring crop, water reserves in reservoirs remain at just 50% of their capacity. Furthermore, water supplies have been on decline, with a 3 to 6 million cubic-metre fall every week.
It is predicted that over 11,700 ha of crops will be affected by the acute drought. Re-zoning plans, therefore, are a good solution.
For the coming summer-autumn crop, Binh Dinh Province will produce 40,750 ha of rice and vegetables. This requires drastic measures from the locality to meet the set target. Re-zoning farming plans will help the province better control water resources to limit the damage and ensure production.
