VTV.vn - Vietnam ranks 78th in the world in the rate of cancer, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

On average, every 5 minutes, a person dies of cancer. In order to diagnosis patients early and improve cancer treatment, state-of-the-art technology has been adopted in Vietnam in recent years. Some methods help lengthen patients' lives by 10 to 20 years, instead of just 4 months as was the case in the past.

This patient suffers from liver cancer. His tumors are quite big. Previously, patients would undergo a surgery to remove tumors, before radiation therapy. However, this method is only effective for small tumors with patients who are diagnosed early. Meanwhile, the use of intra-arterial (Y-90) microspheres has proven effective. The microspheres are put into the liver and target only cancerous cells without affecting normal cells. Studies show that 60% of patients with liver cancer are cured successfully this way.

Recently, the Vietnam National Cancer hospital, also known as K Hospital, has started to use the Elekta Synergy system. This is the most modern radiotherapy method in the world. Vietnam is one of the first countries in the region to have this system. The linear accelerator brings 3D imaging into the treatment set up process.  It also reduces radiation exposure to 1-2 minutes.

Now, instead of going abroad for treatments, cancer patients are able to get access to treatments using the latest technology right here in Vietnam.
