At a seminar on the role of bicycle transportation in cities, held in Hanoi on Nov 17th, foreign experts shared their opinions and experiences, especially in raising awareness in the community. This is one of the solutions Vietnam is working on.
“In order to raise awareness of citizens, there should be the involvement of all stakeholders, including the government, authorities at all levels, associations and manufacturers”, said Nguyen Huu Son - Vice Chairman of Vietnam Association of Automobiles, Motorcycles & Bicycles.
Fossil fuels are one of the main causes of the greenhouse effect and of global warming, as is the use of personal vehicles such as cars and motorcycles.
This is why many countries, including Vietnam, have been encouraging residents to use bicycles in urban areas instead to reduce the impact.
In France, there are currently up to 55,000 public bicycle stations located in 42 cities around the country. 32% of its citizens use bicycles regularly, an increase from 23% just 3 years ago.
“In France, bicycles play an important role in public transportation. In cities with high pollution, the use of bicycles is encouraged to cope with transportation issues. I think Vietnam can also do this”, said Lionel Bayard - Export & Marketing Manager, Peugeot Cycles.
