VTV.vn - The international Internet cable system linking Vietnam and the U.S. has broken for the second time this year.

The rapture is possibly located somewhere on the section between Ho Chi Minh City and Hong Kong in the AAG (Asia America Gateway) submarine system, the center that operates the cable said early Thursday.

The incident affects Internet connection to overseas servers of all service providers in Vietnam. The AAG operator said it is working with relevant units to identify the exact position of the break.

This is the second cable cut Vietnam has suffered this year, following the incident on January 5, which took more than two weeks to repair.

Internet traffic in Vietnam is greatly affected whenever the AAG cable ruptures, as the system has the largest capacity out of the four submarine Internet cables that provide connectivity for the Southeast Asian country, according to an official from FPT, an Internet service provider.

As in previous cases, the latest cable cut slows down Internet speed whenever Vietnamese users utilize services hosted overseas.

Users of domestic services, however, are unfazed by the incident.

The AAG is a 20,000-kilometer-long submarine communications cable system, connecting Southeast Asia with the U.S. mainland, across the Pacific Ocean via Guam and Hawaii.

The cable has encountered frequent breaks and outages since it was completed in late 2009. The cable system was hit by three cuts last year.

A cut may be caused by sharks or vessels passing the area where the cable is laid, according to insiders.
