Ha Thi Anh Nguyet, 34, of Quang Ninh Province was arrested on August 4. She admitted to her crime, according to the police.
The 72-year-old American man, a former police officer, reported to Da Lat City police on July 27 that he had met a Vietnamese woman nicknamed “Sapphire” online.
The woman introduced herself as a fashion designer and businesswoman in Da Lat.
The pair agreed to meet in the city.
On the evening of July 26, they met at the local pub. The woman, who was eight months pregnant, suggested that they went to the man’s place after the pub closed.
She also bought two bottles of wine.
The following morning, the man woke up and the woman had gone. He found his iPad, mobile phone, watch, a credit card and VND8 million of cash missing.
He tried to call and chat with her online but she did not reply.
After he reported the case to Da Lat police, deputy police chief Phan Tat Chi created an account to chat online and entered the page that the woman previously visited to meet the American man.
Chi introduced himself as a divorced, rich Vietnamese French who wanted to got back to Vietnam and marry a Vietnames woman.
As he expected, Nguyet jumped in to chat with him.
He asked her where she was as he wanted to come visit her. But she refused to give details.
As Nguyet was using the iPad she took from the American man, police managed to track her down.
On August 4, police arrested Nguyet at a house in Nha Trang City.
Nguyet confessed to police she put four sleeping pills into the man’s wine before taking his property.
She allegedly got back to Nha Trang and used his credit card to buy items worth $2,100.
She said she is married to a man she met in prison and is expecting their first child.
