According to the World Health Organization, or WHO, heavy rainfall linked to El Niño could increase the risk of cholera and create conditions for disease-carrying mosquitoes, raising the threat of malaria, dengue and chikungunya.
The risks are particularly high in areas with weak health systems, food insecurity or ongoing humanitarian crises. The WHO is urging countries to take early preventive action to limit the impact on public health.
The World Meteorological Organization says El Niño’s effects could continue into 2027./.
