In Lao Cai, teams are intensifying their search based on information provided by veterans and witnesses.
At Hill 350B in Bát Xát Commune, teams spent nearly a month searching for remains. Nine soldiers' remains were eventually recovered, based on information from a veteran who buried his comrades there.
Hoang Xuan Duc, Regiment 192, Hoang Lien Son Province, said: "Decades of rain and weather erased the signs of the graves. Local teams could not recover everyone. So I provided the information to the search team. I do not want any of my comrades to remain in the mountains."
In A Mú Sung Commune, relatives are following the search for soldiers buried at the former Nậm Mít Border Security Police Station.
Ly Thi Nga, daughter of a fallen soldier, said: "We searched many cemeteries for my father. But a DNA test in 2018 showed he was not there. We were very disappointed. We hope this will be the last search and that we finally find him."
More than 2,000 hectares recently cleared of bombs and unexploded ordnance have also been surveyed for possible burial sites. Every piece of information is being checked since even the slightest clue could help locate a fallen soldier.
Colonel Hoang Van Toan, Deputy Political Commissar, Lao Cai Provincial Military Command, said: "We focus on areas where French posts once stood and routes used by troops heading to Điện Biên Phủ. With respect to the northern border conflict, we search by battlefield and the time of the fighting. This helps make the process faster, more accurate, and more effective."
More than 60 fallen soldiers' remains have been found since the campaign began.
