Water and food supplies have become more important than ever for cattle in the province. Farmers are finding ways and applying new method in farming and breeding, to avoid losses during the peak of the dry season.
The barn of farmer Lê Văn Bảy is right next to a pasture. He currently has to spend half an hour a day to take care of the field, and his cows don’t have to go far for grass.
Households with large scale farms are also finding ways to respond to drought. They are storing water and food early. Farmers have planted and bought grass for their livestock. Thành Loan Farm in Thuận Nam District is already prepared.
A farmer, Thanh Loan Farm, Ninh Thuan Province said: "We used to run back and forth to get water. Now we save much more time as we’ve stocked food and water nearby".
Ninh Thuận Province has about 300,000 livestock. Therefore, water and food supply are very important. It is obviously much more efficient to let livestock remain in place, rather than having to move them to source food.
Phan Quang Thuu, Deputy Director, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Ninh Thuan Province said: "We encourage farmers to apply this method on a larger scale. Farmers have barns and grass, food source right next door".
However, the difficulty is sourcing finance. Farmers are expecting to receive support and funds long before drought, to save their cattle in time.
