This is the first official visit to Japan by Nguyen Phu Trong as party leader, and is intended to deepen the ties between the two countries.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe hosted an official reception later the same day for Trong at the Akasaka Palace. The Japanese Cabinet also attended the welcome.
Prime Minister Abe stressed General Secretary Trong’s visit would develop bilateral ties. Trong first congratulated PM Abe for his re-election as president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. He also reiterated Vietnam’s policy of considering Japan one of its top partners.
Both sides agreed to consolidate ties through high-level visits. PM Abe pledged to continue Official Development Assistance to Vietnam in the coming years, first with 1 million USD for highway projects and ports. He also expressed the hope to work with Vietnam in infrastructure, including Long Thanh International Airport and Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Plant. Also on the occasion, both sides announced the legal import of Vietnamese mangoes and Japanese apples from September 17th.
PM Shinzo Abe and Party Leader Nguyen Phu Trong shared concerns over the recent developments in the East Sea, and highlighted the need for related parties to conform to international laws. Concluding talks, the two sides issued a joint statement on Japanese-Vietnamese relations.
