VTV.vn - Vietnam needs to be more proactive in its prevention activities for heavy rain and flood risks, taking in to consideration the fact that China is discharging floods on two major river systems, the Da River and the Red River.

This water discharging activity has caused 7 dyke incidents in Vietnam. According to the General Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, Vietnam may also experience the same climate condition of heavy rains and flooding as has been seen in China.

Vietnam has a number of river basins that also have similar characteristics to the Yangtze river in China, especially the Red River basin.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been 16 different types of natural disasters in Vietnam, including 223 thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail in 46 provinces and cities nationwide. 65 people are dead or missing.

The economy has lost nearly 4 trillion VND. In particular, in July alone, Vietnam experienced 7 heavy rains, along with 5 flash floods and landslides in the northern mountainous area.

On July 20-21, Ha Giang province experienced heavy rain of up to 350mm in 10 hours, killing 5 people. Also from August 16-21, due to the impact of typhoon Higos, the northern mountainous area experienced heavy rain of 200-400mm./.
