Beyond relaxation: When travel becomes a journey to wellbeing

As travelers increasingly look beyond conventional leisure for ways to restore physical and emotional wellbeing, wellness-focused destinations are emerging in northern Vietnam, combining nature, local culture and holistic experiences.

Located about 40 minutes from Hanoi, Senna Wellness Retreat in Bac Ninh is introducing a wellness-focused approach that combines the natural landscape and cultural heritage of Kinh Bac with a range of experiences designed around physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Set amid lush greenery and centuries-old heritage trees, the retreat draws on the cultural identity of Kinh Bac in its approach to hospitality and spatial design. Elements associated with the Five Elements, the traditional philosophy of living in harmony with nature and the understated hospitality of the region are incorporated into the guest experience.

Rather than following a conventional resort model, Senna describes its approach as a holistic wellness ecosystem. The concept goes beyond physical health to include mental and emotional balance, personal connections and the quality of everyday experiences.

The retreat offers guests different levels of engagement with wellness. Those seeking a short break can simply spend time in nature, while others can take part in more structured programmes focused on recovery, relaxation and personalised wellbeing.

Activities include yoga, meditation, therapeutic qigong, spa treatments, herbal foot soaks and personalised wellness programmes. Guests can also access facilities including a four-season saltwater pool, sauna, Himalayan salt room and jacuzzi.

Senna also incorporates creative activities such as pottery, painting and candle making into its wellness offering. These experiences are intended to encourage guests to slow down, engage their senses and reconnect with creativity, providing an alternative to the constant digital connectivity of everyday life.

Among its more distinctive experiences is Floating Sound Bath, which combines sound meditation with floating on water. Singing bowls, mindful breathing and the surrounding stillness are used to create a relaxing sensory environment, with the experience designed to ease tension and support emotional balance.

Nutrition is another part of the retreat's approach, with menus developed around balanced eating principles. Meanwhile, shared meals, creative workshops and time spent in natural surroundings are positioned as opportunities for guests to strengthen connections with family, friends and colleagues.

According to Vu Thien Ha, CEO and founder of Senna Wellness Retreat, the aim is to create a place where people can reconnect with themselves and the people they care about, rather than simply providing accommodation.

"Wellness does not exist only in the spa or within a treatment programme. It is present in every meal, every space, every conversation and every person at Senna," she said.

The retreat's approach reflects a broader change in the travel industry, as wellness becomes increasingly integrated into consumers' lifestyles and holiday choices.

Wellness travel is moving beyond the traditional concept of a spa break or a luxury retreat. Travelers are increasingly seeking experiences that address multiple aspects of wellbeing, from physical activity and nutrition to stress management, mindfulness and social connection.

In Vietnam, destinations such as Da Lat, Hoi An and Phu Quoc have long attracted visitors with their natural landscapes and leisure experiences. The development of wellness-focused destinations in northern Vietnam could broaden the market, particularly for short breaks from Hanoi and other urban centres.

Northern Vietnam has several characteristics that could support this segment, including its proximity to major cities, diverse natural landscapes and extensive cultural heritage. Combining wellness with local culture could also create differentiated tourism products beyond conventional resort experiences.

For destinations such as Bac Ninh, this creates an opportunity to turn proximity to Hanoi into an advantage, offering travelers a way to temporarily step away from urban routines without requiring a long journey.

As wellness becomes less of a niche travel category and more closely connected with everyday lifestyle choices, the definition of a holiday is also changing. For an increasing number of travelers, the value of a trip may be measured not only by where they go or what they see, but by how they feel when they return.
