VTV.vn - Biofloc is a recent aquaculture technology that uses organic materials and micro-organisms.

The technology was invented in 2002 by the Israeli Professor Yoram Avnimelech. Since then, it has quickly gained popularity in many countries around the world. And in Vietnam, with the support of the Israeli embassy, Professor Avnimelech gave two training courses for the application of Biofloc in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City last week.

This is the Biofloc Technology training course given by Professor Avnimelech in Hanoi last week. He is instructing participants on how to aerate and assess water indexes. This is one of the necessary steps in applying Biofloc technology. Based on these indexes, growers can maintain food balance and stimulate the development of micro-organisms.

Experts recommended that Biofloc should not be applied to species requiring pure water. The result of  an experiment showed that the amount of micro-organisms increased significantly in a water sample infused with Biofloc. This not only makes food resources for fisheries abundant, its also reduces the risk of epidemics.

This technology requires fewer water changes, which means less waste-water released into the environment. Waste-water includes large amounts of fish feed and waste, but when we add cassava, maize and rice powder, ammonia levels decrease. Biofloc is suitable for low-income farmers in Vietnam.

Biofloc is expected to reduce production costs for Vietnamese farmers. But more importantly, it is hoped to reduce waste-water released into the environment from aquaculture activities, thus contributing to the sustainable development of this sector.
