Vietnam steps up electronic waste recycling

VTV.vn - Vietnam and other countries are facing increasing problems due to growing amounts electronic waste as a by-product of development.

Discarded electronics can cause severe environmental damage, so as part of efforts to curb this growing situation, the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology has been running a project to recycle waste technology to help minimise the environmental impact of development. 

According to the 2011 report on Vietnam’s environmental status, the countryannually generated 28 million tonnes of solid waste and 700 thousand tonnes of hazardous waste. URENCO, the Hanoi Urban Environment Company Limited forecasts that by 2020, Vietnam will see 10.6 million discarded electronic household appliances including TVs, computers, fridges, air-conditioners and washing machines.

A project to promote capacity building and the transfer and development of waste recycling technology has been running since June last year, with 1.5 million dollars of Korean ODA.

Heat waste treatment equipment was among 72 machines provided to the Vietnam Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology on October 21st by the Korea International Cooperation Agency.
