The main reason for this has been attributed to the over-development of fish farming land, which has surpassed demand. In 2005, the total area of tra fish farming land in the Mekong Delta region was 3,548 hectares. This figure soared to 8,000 hectares by 2015.
Along with farming area, during this 10 year-span, the tra fish output also increased from 389,000 to 1.1 million tonnes. Supply surpassed demand, leading many enterprises to reduce sale prices. The golden age of tra fish export saw its end in 2013 when a series of tra fish enterprises announced bankruptcy.
