After 21 days fishing near Vietnam’s Paracel Islands, Bui Dinh Cam has caught 800 kilos of tuna and mackerel. They were sold out as soon as the ship docked.
"When my ship docked, the officials approached us to test the fish and helped us sell them. If things continue, we’ll stay with the sea", said Bui Dinh Cam.
15 to 20 Quang Tri boats are fishing offshore while over 50 boats setting sail. The docks are becoming lively again.
In the fish market, fish for export saw no change in price while fish for the domestic market such as mackerel and sardines are 30% more expensive.
"In the coming time, if prices aren’t stable, the province will buy the fish from the fishermen and sell them to factories", said Ha Sy Dong, Vice Chairman of Quang Tri Province People’s Committee.
Quang Tri’s authorities have requested relevant departments and agencies to collect information about the fishing boats and their catch, and give them safe catch certification as soon as they dock. With their help, fishermen are seeing restored consumer confidence which will help the fishing sector recover from the recent mass fish deaths.
