According to the local agriculture authority, the forecast for Mirinae was inaccurate, which confused residents.
The forecast said the estimated wind strength was level 6-7, with gusts up to level 8-9, while the actual strength was 12-13. It also predicted that the storm would last for 1-2 hours, while it was actually 6 hours long. 95% of planted rice has been destroyed, and hundreds of trees have been uprooted. The local electricity sector suffered with over 14,000 electrical poles falling down.
"The meteorological forecasting sector must learn from this experience and prepare more carefully for the next storms. The sector must analyse the storms’ scale, direction, and wind strength based on various sources of information. Awareness and preparation must be enhanced, as storm season has just begun", said Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
More exact information and thorough preparations must be made for the coming storms. Each year, there are an average of 10 storms in the East Sea.
