For the first time, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology has successfully created Nano FGC Complex - a new material for producing medicine for cancer treatment and prevention. This achievement is hoped to become a breakthrough in applying nano technology to health care in Vietnam.
Nano FGC Complex contains three main active elements including curcumin, fucoidan and saponin taken from curcumin, seaweed and false ginseng, respectively. These herbs contain substances that prevent tumor growth. However, the substances by themselves are not that effective because they are not easily absorbed if taken directly. With the Nano FGC Complex, the substances are easily dissolved and then absorbed, which strengthens their impact on cancer cells.
Prof. - Dr. Nguyen Quang Liem, Director, Institute of Material Science, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology said: “This technology turns substances into a nano form, which means the substances can be sent more exactly to tumors”.
In addition to its scientific value, the successful creation and application of Nano FGC Complex also marks the fruitful cooperation between a pharmaceutical company and the Institute of Material Science under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
“I think today’s event marks a new era in nano technology development in Vietnam in order to boost healthcare in the country”, Prof. Nguyen Van Hieu, Former President, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology added.
This new achievement in nano technology is being experimented with on some kinds of cancer cells and on mice. Initial results show that the new technology is quite effective in preventing tumor growth and nurturing cells that protect the body. Each year, Vietnam has about 150 thousand new cancer cases and over 70 thousand people die of cancer. Each new advance in cancer treatment is a new hope for thousands of patients in Vietnam.
