The project has already started and will be carried out until 2020 with the aim of improving tuna output, quality, and added value as part of efforts to develop the industry.
According to the local authorities of Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa, total tuna output will reach 69,000 tonnes by 2016. Therefore, the implementation of the government’s plan to create a tuna production chain will help local fishermen reduce post-harvest losses by 15%. The local fishermen will also receive technical training on Japanese fishing, processing and preservation standards. Binh Dinh Province recently received fishing equipment from the Japanese International Co-operation Agency (JICA) to improve the commercial value of their tuna.
Reality shows that implementing the Japanese approach to tuna fishing can bring higher returns. Therefore, Binh Dinh Province is trying to combine this new tuna fishing model into its plan to develop a tuna production chain from fishing, processing to sale. This new approach will hopefully mean better financial returns for the fishing communities of Binh Dinh Province.
