The United Nations officially founded the day in 2011 in a bid to raise awareness and promote the protection of over 1.1 billion girl around the world.
Participants of this year's event have lobbied for the collection of statistics on girl and specific support policies for these subjects. One of the most concerning issues raised by the UN is child marriage. There is one case of child marriage in every 3 girls under 18, according to statistics. These individuals usually have to drop out of school and are both physically and psychologically abused. UNICEF has reaveled that many children aged 10 - 14 have to undertake hard labour.
