VTV.vn - As of 7 pm Monday, heavy rain and floods in northern Vietnam had left 25 dead, 6 injured, and 3 missing.

The rain also caused floods which destroyed  3,500 homes, flooded over 10,000 hectares of rice and crops and damaged over 10 km of canals. In the northern province of Quang Ninh, Ha Long City has been receiving increasingly heavy rain for days which has caused landslides in many residential areas; putting hundreds of houses at risk of collapse. Over 100 households in Bach Dang District, Ha Long City were evacuated from the area after heavy rain caused landslides and put their homes at risks.

About 330 households in Ha Long City are still at risk of landslides. 117 locations in the city have already suffered from landslides as heavy rain has continued to intensify over the last few days.

In addition to the natural causes, the city’s planning had also caused the heavy damage. As a mountainous town, half of the city’s residents live on the hillsides, which put pressure on the embankments. Poor town planning has seen residential areas flatten out parts of slopes on foothills to build homes, which increased the risks of landslides.

Ha Long city has been working to determine the areas at risks to continue evacuations, as well as prepared emergency rescue plans.
