These are 800 horse power vessels owned by fishermen in Duc Trach Ward, Bo Trach District in the central province of Quang Binh. Although massive pollution caused by the Formosa steel plant has greatly affected their fishing activities, locals are building new vessels to continue their job.
The border guard force has actively supported fishermen in building their ships, boosting the relationship between the people and the soldiers. This also encourages fishermen to overcome their difficulties to continue their fishing activities.
Currently, there are about 1,200 offshore fishing vessels with capacity from 90 horse power. In 2016, the province plan to build 70 new pieces, including 30 steel-hulled vessels and 40 wooden fishing boats. Quang Binh will continue to be one of the provinces with the biggest number of offshore fishing vesselsin the country. This not only helps the fishermen maintain their livelihoods but also helps protect the country’s sovereignty.
