The illegal disposal was originally discovered on July 11th. Since then, an investigation, led by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has taken place. The investigation revealed dangerous levels of cyanide. However, surrounding land and groundwater at the site had yet to be polluted.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment concluded that the Formosa Ha Tinh company had violated a number of regulations on management of industrial and hazardous waste. The company will be fined for the violations and is expected to conduct a clean-up of the area to minimise any effects on the surrounding environment in accordance with the Law on the Environment.
The Ha Tinh Department of Natural Resources and Environment will monitor the company's clean-up and management of the waste.
