The Ministry of Industry and Trade estimates that in 2016, climate change with droughts, salt water intrusion and typhoons have cost the agriculture sector 800,000 tonnes of rice, and affected the food security of 1.1 million people.
The total economic loss of the sector is about $1.7 billion, equivalent to nearly 1% of Vietnam's GDP. It is estimated that each year, 300 people were reported dead or missing due to natural disasters, with economic losses ranging from 1 to 1.5% of GDP in the last ten years.
