VTV.vn - Today, a governmental conference on sustainable development in the Mekong Delta and adaptation to climate change kicked off in the city of Can Tho.

The conference will tackle ideas and solutions for the area responsible for majority of rice production in the country.

Over the past 20 years, several areas in Đồng Tháp Mười and Tứ giác Long Xuyên have been closed by flood embankments. In addition to the depletion of nutrients in the soil, the loss of natural resources has created the loss of livelihood for many people.

The Mekong Delta region is home to 18 million people, contributing 18% of the nation's GDP, 90% of rice export turnover, 60% of the nation's total aquatic exports and 70% of fruit exports. Over recent years, the region has suffered severe consequences of climate change such as droughts, sea-water intrusion and landslides.
