The short documentary 'Why Doesn’t Binh Get Married?’ tells the story of a modern Vietnamese woman struggling against the pressure to marry someone. Pham Minh Ha’s film was one of the 54 submissions to the 10 Months 10 Docs project sponsored by the US Embassy.
Over 10 months, workshops of Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents (TPD) showed the youths how to portray emerging social issues such as human rights. Two Oscar winners Mc Harris and Arnold Soullier were among the American supervisors on the project.
Director Bui Thac Chuyen, Head of 10 Months 10 Docs Project and TPD, said: "The assistance from American filmmakers such as professor Mc Harris was inspirational. Everyone learned their own valuable lesson. Some of the movies have left a strong impression on the audiences. The event also attracted the attendance of US ambassador Ted Osius and Cultural Affairs Officer Michael Turner".
Michael Turner, Cultural Affairs Officer, Embassy of the USA in Vietnam, said: "What we want is for Vietnam and its people to reach its fullest potential. We want a strong, prosperous and independent Vietnam that respects human rights and international rule of law. And, the Vietnamese people are so energetic, vibrant and dynamic. It is an honour and privilege to serve here".
Turner’s words marked the end of the project, which is part of a series of a events in the lead up to July 11th, when the 2 peoples celebrate 20 years of normalised Vietnam - US relations.
