Utilizing artificial intelligence to manage television content

VTV.vn - This was the topic presented by Noventiq Vietnam's Research and AI Solutions Application Team during a digital transformation seminar organized by Vietnam Television.

Television industry uses data to understand digital audience profile

Vietnam Television is currently undergoing a digital transformation in various aspects of its operations, including management, production, broadcasting, and especially content distribution. In addition, the VTVGo platform has been recognized by the Ministry of Information and Communications as the national digital platform with a large audience base, and there are plans to further expand business models and distribution.

However, "the most challenging undertaking for VTV and other television networks is the application of technology to production, broadcasting and distribution processes. The general limitation in the television industry, and in Vietnam Television in particular, is the use of data. So far, no company has managed to gain economic value from data usage while still struggling to create and distribute digital content and build a digital audience," said Mr. Dinh Dac Vinh, Deputy Director General of Vietnam Television.

On the issue of leveraging data to create value, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Information and Communications, said, "Today, television needs to understand the audience, especially when young viewers tend to seek information in the digital space instead of relying on traditional media. Only when a TV network has its own platform and truly understands its viewers - who they are and what their habits are - can it better serve them, and this is where TV networks have the opportunity to create value and generate revenue."

Application of artificial intelligence technology for managing television content

Today's organizations generate a wealth of information and documents throughout their operations and business processes. The key question is how to effectively utilize this data. Vietnam Television has an enormous repository of media content that represents significant economic value. This poses numerous challenges in managing, operating and, most importantly, effectively monetizing this valuable content.

To address this issue, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tu, Head of the Research and AI Solutions Application Team at Noventiq Vietnam, presented at the seminar the application of AI technology in creating metadata for television content management.

As one of the leading providers of digital transformation and information security solutions in Vietnam, Noventiq Vietnam is currently working with Vietnam Television's Archive Center to apply AI technology in video extraction and deep search based on metadata creation.

According to Mr. Tu, Vietnam Television's Archive Center has a huge video library. To facilitate search, the center needs to thoroughly catalog these videos. However, manual cataloging is time-consuming, and human efforts cannot keep up with the sheer volume of videos. Currently, the Center is only able to catalog a few programs, which risks wasting Vietnam Television's video resources.

Therefore, the Archive Center and Noventiq have teamed up to develop an integrated solution using artificial intelligence to create and extract data from videos. Initial results of applying AI to the process of creating and extracting video data have reduced the time required by 80% compared to manual efforts.

Within this metadata creation system, Noventiq uses two components: Video Architecture to automate data extraction and feature extraction from video. In addition, Noventiq uses OpenAI's ChatGPT technology to summarize and create metadata for videos.

The system is relatively simple to use: Users upload videos to the platform and the system does the rest automatically. Users can interact with the dashboard or a virtual assistant in natural language to search for videos based on their needs. The dashboard has an easy-to-use interface that targets a broad audience - anyone can use this tool. In terms of video management, it goes beyond the visual and audio aspects of the video. The system can automatically extract metadata, identify characters in the video, generate keywords and summarize the content of the video, even converting content to text.

This is a critical step that reduces the workload for content editors when archiving material after broadcast. At the same time, automated metadata creation enhances the vibrancy and richness of content and serves as an essential precursor to efficient and accurate search and discovery tools. This is the main goal the Archive Center is working towards for future content exploitation.
