According to the local authorities, the heaviest downpour in 40 years killed 18 people and damaged 3,700 local houses, schools, hospitals and medical stations. The total damage has amounted to nearly 70 million US dollars. The heavy rain has also ruined local coal industry, and left thousands of tourists stranded on Co To Island.
Local authorities have been stepping up repairing efforts and is calling for more donations from different sources to help the locals recover from the disaster.
