VTV.vn - The country's main rice growing region of the Mekong Delta is counting down the days as discharged water from Chinese dams far upstream make their way downstream.

The release will go some way towards helping the Mekong Delta as it deals with the worst drought and saline intrusion in recent history.

Mekong River levels have dropped by as much as a half. China has discharged water from its Jinhhong Dam in response to a Vietnamese request to help alleviate the crisis. Nearly 10 days have passed and these waters have already reached the Lao capital of Vientiane. More to follow.

According to experts from the commission, it will take up to 17 days for the discharged water from China to traverse the Laos – Cambodia border point and possibly a month for the waters to reach Vietnam.
