Vietnam has been selected as a member of the UN’s ECOSOC, and VTV had the opportunity to talk with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh about the new role and responsibilities of Vietnam in this international organisation.
Quang Anh, VTV Reporter: Could you please give some explanation about the significance of Vietnam being elected to the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council? And how will Vietnam contribute to ECOSOC activities?
Pham Binh Minh - Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister: The fact that Vietnam was just selected to be a member of the UN’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2016-2018 tenure shows that Vietnam has gained international credibility and is acknowledgement of the country’s role and position in the global arena. More importantly, Vietnam’s efforts in terms of socio-economic development in the country as well as contributions to the development of the United Nations are widely recognised. Vietnam will work together with 53 other ECOSOC members to monitor, assess and design strategies and measures to carry out sustainable development goals set out in the 70th UN session.

Quang Anh, VTV Reporter: Vietnam has been selected to join the ECOSOC while also serving on the UN’s Human Rights Council? Would that have any impact on Vietnam’s current position in the UN?
Pham Binh Minh - Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister: Vietnam was well recognised for its position and contributions to the operation of the UN, especially in terms of maintaining peace and security as a member of the security council, protecting human rights as a member of the human rights council, and contributing to the socio-development and poverty reduction process as a member of ECOSOC. The fact that Vietnam has again overwhelmingly won its election shows that international community highly appreciates Vietnam’s contributions in the UN. Vietnam was trusted to serve its new role.
