This is a part of the United Nations Summit on the adoption of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development. Vietnamese State President Truong Tan Sang, together with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Presidents of Laos, the Republic of Korea, Peru, and Rwanda delivered their speeches at the event.
Speaking at the event, Vietnamese State President Truong Tan Sang stressed that each government should set up a proper rural development plan based on each country’s conditions. He highlighted Vietnam’s experience in developing rural areas, saying that farmers must be the ones deciding what is to be done in the development process, as they understand the rural areas where they live. President Sang also pointed out the need to mobilise resources from the whole society in rural development.
Vietnamese State President Truong Tan Sang: "As an agricultural country with 70% of its population living in rural areas, Vietnam puts great emphasis on sustainable agriculture and rural development. Since 2010, Vietnam has implemented a national programme on building new-style rural areas, which includes 19 criteria aimed at boosting rural development, improving farmers’ living conditions, and increasing their income. Vietnam’s rural areas are undergoing significant changes. 700 thousand kilometres of country road, 20 thousand classrooms, and thousands of cultural houses, village hospitals, water supply stations, and irrigation works have been built and upgraded".
State President Truong Tan Sang concluded his speech by stating Vietnam’s willingness to share its experience in sustainable agriculture and rural development with other countries, ensuring that no groups will become marginalised in the development process.
