Half a century since the country won peace and reunification, Ho Chi Minh City, along with former battlefields, has been "revived" and developed strongly.

These achievements include the significant contributions of the younger generations, who were born and raised in a time when the war had long passed.

Despite working in different fields, they share a common ideal and a fervent desire to work, study, and innovate, all driven by the aspiration to make the nation "more dignified, bigger, and more beautiful", just as President Ho Chi Minh once wished.

Meeting with outstanding young people of 2024, who have made significant contributions to the country's development, brings to light the honour, pride, and immense responsibility felt by the youth of today as they carry forward the legacy of their predecessors to write new "Victorious Springs."

Studying and training to be worthy of nation’s future masters

Nguyen Huu Tien Hung, born in 2006 in Bac Ninh, was named one of Vietnam’s Ten Outstanding Young Faces of 2024. He expressed his emotions amid the country’s jubilant celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification.

"Living in this historic April, as all levels, sectors, units, especially the armed forces, hurriedly prepare for celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification, I feel proud and happy and have more motivation and belief to study and research diligently to become a doctor," Nguyen Huu Tien Hung

Though only a first-year student at Hanoi Medical University, Hung is deeply engaged in his studies and scientific research, aspiring to don the white coat and stand by patients, battling death to save lives.

As a national excellent student for many consecutive years and having won a gold medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad in 2023 and 2024, Hung was also awarded the Second-Class Labour Order by the President in 2024. Yet, even during his school years, he harboured a deep passion for history.

For Hung, studying history is not merely to fulfil the sentence: "Our people must know our history to understand the roots of Vietnam" but also to absorb the moral lesson of "When drinking water, remember its source", thus cultivating a sense of idealism and social responsibility.

The more he cherishes and takes pride in the nation’s history and the arduous journey of nation-building and defence of the previous generations, the more Hung understands that today’s independence and freedom were won at a tremendous cost in blood, youth, lives, and happiness. Grateful for the sacrifices of heroes and soldiers, Hung believes that today’s generation must safeguard and promote the priceless traditions of bravery, resilience, and willingness to sacrifice for the nation.

To live up to the trust and expectations of his family, teachers, and friends, Hung recognises the need to exert even greater efforts, following President Ho Chi Minh’s teachings. Beyond that, he strives to continuously study, accumulate knowledge, enhance his skills, participate in scientific research, and apply innovations to contribute to national development.

Youth and multi-million-dollar projects

Born in Dong Hoi, Quang Binh — a land of year-round sunshine and once ploughed by war bombs — Lieutenant Hoang Khac Hieu (born in 1996), an IT specialist at Viettel Solutions, has tirelessly worked on multi-million-dollar projects, honouring the invaluable sacrifices of previous generations who fought for independence and freedom.

"Throughout my life, I have witnessed the country’s remarkable growth. From a war-torn, impoverished nation, Vietnam has overcome countless hardships to emerge as one of the fastest-growing economies in the region and the world. Our people’s living standards have steadily improved, and Vietnam’s international position has been increasingly recognised. These achievements would not have been possible without the sacrifices of our forefathers who devoted their youth, blood, and lives for our freedom. As their descendants, it is our duty to continue writing the glorious historical pages through concrete, meaningful actions," Hieu said.

For Hieu, continuing the tradition of our ancestors means living patriotically, working responsibly, and relentlessly striving toward greater goals. To him, work is not merely a job but a mission, every individual must excel in their role to contribute to national progress.

Since joining Viettel Solutions, Hieu has led and developed major technology initiatives, particularly in smart transportation and government service technologies.

Among his notable projects are the "Green Corridor" system developed during the Covid-19 pandemic to maintain nationwide traffic flow and smart traffic monitoring systems deployed in Dubai and Peru. Notably, he helped Viettel Solutions generate around 200 billion VND in revenue from these projects.

During his working at Viettel Solutions, Hieu was named Emulation Soldier from 2021 to 2024, received two certificates of merit from the Ministry of National Defence, was honoured as one of Vietnam’s Ten Outstanding Young Faces of 2024, and stood among the ten outstanding young faces of the entire army. He was also promoted to the rank of Lieutenant by General Phan Van Giang, remarkable motivation that fuel his continued efforts for national development.

Continuing the tradition and shaping the future

Fifty years have passed, and the scars of war have healed. Today, Ho Chi Minh City stands tall as the nation’s economic and political powerhouse.

Proud to have grown up in the city bearing Uncle Ho’s name and amidst the flag-filled celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification, Dr Ha Thi Thanh Huong (born in 1989) is Head of the Regenerative Medicine Department and Brain Health Laboratory at the International University, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM). As one of Vietnam’s Ten Outstanding Young Faces of 2023, and winner of the Vietnam Women’s Award in 2024, she feels profound pride and gratitude for the achievements gained by forefathers’ generation.

"After the war, from ruins and loss, our forefathers resiliently rebuilt the nation, restoring infrastructure: roads, bridges, schools and hospitals, enabling our generation to live in a peaceful, stable society with opportunities for holistic development. Their silent but enduring contributions have laid the firm foundations for the nation’s future," Huong said.

To continue this glorious tradition, Huong and her peers are acutely aware of their responsibility to learn, train, and contribute. According to her, regardless of one's role in society, young people can serve the nation by upholding the spirit of people service and continuously improving themselves.

Currently working at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering at the International University, VNU-HCM, Huong engages in teaching, mentoring, and inspiring students with scientific passion and social responsibility. She strives to equip students not just with professional knowledge but also with practical skills, work ethics, and dedication to the advancement of science and technology in Vietnam.

Beyond her academic role, Huong frequently interacts with doctors, healthcare workers, and patients facing medical challenges. This experience deepens her understanding of the sector’s difficulties and drives her and her colleagues to research and develop technological solutions to enhance the quality of healthcare in Vietnam.

In the digital era, where science and technology are the "master keys" to advancing into a new age, young people play a particularly vital role.

Chu Hong Minh, Member of the Central Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Communist Youth Union, Member of the Hanoi Party Committee, and Secretary of the Hanoi Youth Union, affirmed that youth are the vanguard force, playing a crucial role in national construction and defence, especially as the country embarks on a path of rapid, sustainable development and deeper international integration. Today’s youths are not only the inheritors of tradition but also the architects of the future, carrying within them a spirit of aspiration, responsibility, and dedication.

Today’s generation is continuing their predecessors’ proud traditions through practical and effective actions, guided by the ideals of "Patriotism - Dedication - Creativity." Maintaining a deep love for their homeland and a sense of responsibility to the nation, young people proudly uphold the nation's culture and history and are eager to contribute and build a prosperous country.

This love for the homeland is not merely expressed in words but manifested through concrete thoughts and actions. Young people actively participate in volunteer movements, startups, and community-focused innovation while striving to become a highly skilled young workforce.

Not only inheriting the indomitable spirit of their forefathers, today's youths also creatively adapt this tradition to the new era of knowledge, technology, and international integration. From movements like "Creative Youth", "Volunteer Youth", and "Youth Start-ups" to deployments at border areas and islands, young people are proving that the tradition is not just preserved but illuminated through action.

While today’s youth no longer face the hardships of war, Chu Hong Minh, Secretary of the Hanoi Youth Union, emphasised that they must still cultivate crucial qualities: profound patriotism, steadfastness in the face of challenges, humility, discipline, and the determination to master knowledge and technology.

Moreover, young people must cultivate ethics, live in a responsible manner towards themselves and their communities, and remain attached to their roots. Only through continuous self-improvement and living for noble ideals, the youth can truly become worthy successors, contributing to building a stronger and more prosperous Vietnam.

The 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification is a time to review our heroic history, reflecting on the arduous yet glorious journey of the nation. It serves the luggage to strengthen and train today’s Vietnamese generation, especially the youth, inspiring them to live with ideals, dreams, and a burning desire to contribute and honour their forebears. Their passionate contributions and achievements form the vital foundation for the nation’s bold strides into a new era - the rising era of the nation.
