VTV.vn - The Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control held an urgent meeting with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Mekong River Commission and related agencies on Friday.

The meeting aims to propose a plan to restrict upstream water discharge to prevent saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta. Since the end of 2015, the Mekong River and parts of the Mekong Delta have seen serious drought and saltwater encroachment. To deal with the issue, the Southern Irrigation Science Institute has proposed a plan to reduce water discharge at hydropower plants in China. The Steering Committee has also asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to report to the Prime Minister, and to send a diplomatic note to China.
