Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said that since Vietnam joined the UN in 1977 Vietnam has valued the UN’s support and effective co-operation in its development. Vietnam has become a middle-income country and has fulfilled many Millennium Development Goals ahead of schedule. The PM believed that Vietnam and UN will promote their relations in development co-operation as well as peace keeping, conflict resolution, security and global issues.
Besides economic growth, Vietnam aimed to promote social advancement and equality, democracy and freedom of citizens while considering people as central to development. UN co-ordinator in Vietnam, Pratibha Mehta used the occasion to present Prime Minister Dung with a UN flag. The prime minister and other visitors later viewed an art exhibition on the UN activities in Vietnam and bilateral relations.
