VTV.vn - A joint lacquer exhibition featuring work by Vietnamese and Korean artists is being held at Vietnam Fine Arts Museum until December 12th in Hanoi.

The exhibition was organised by the Korean Cultural Centre in collaboration with Vietnam Fine Arts Association.

The exhibition features 39 works, including 27 works by Korean artists and 12 by Vietnamese artists. The works depicts landscapes, portraits and life of people of the two countries.

"I’m very happy to take part this exhibition. Vietnam has a long tradition of lacquer painting. I’ve seen a lot of lacquer work at the exhibition, and through that I can feel the beauty of your country", said Yeo Jun Hwan, Korean Painter.

Lacquer is a popular material used for decorating in some Asian countries. But Vietnam claims to have been the first country to use this technique for painting. Unlike Vietnamese lacquer, Korean lacquer painting called “Ottchil” mainly uses shells and was developed from craft making lacquer. Ottchil today has a modern touch.

"This is the first time we’ve held a joint lacquer exhibition with Korean artists. Most of the artists here are still young so this is an opportunity for us to learn the differences between Korean and Vietnamese lacquer", said Tran Khanh Chuong, President Vietnam Fine Arts Association.

The Korean Cultural Centre are also organising lacquer painting, fabric painting, workshops and forums to promote lacquer art.

"Vietnam and South Korea both have a long history of lacquer art, we hope that the exhibition will help further promote and develop the art and open up opportunities to exchange and co-operate between artists the two country", said Seo Su Hyang, Exhibition Curator.
