Star apples have become the fifth Vietnamese fruit to be exported to the United States after dragon fruit, rambutan, lychee and longans.
The notice, which took effect on January 19, said that all imports of fresh star apple fruit must be irradiated for pest eradication prior shipping to the U.S.
The fruit must also be individually wrapped in plastic before shipment to reduce the risk of post-treatment pest re-infestation, according to the USDA.
