Desertification is also increasing due to erosion. However, around ten years ago, people started growing apple trees, (or Son Tra trees) on the sloping lands and stopped growing their other crops. Now the apple trees are starting to make a positive impact on the surrounding land and water.
Bac Ha district has more than 6,000 hectares of fallow land. Because the farmers here planted apple trees this spring continues to have water even during the dry season. In the future, when the trees have many canopies, the spring will be abundant and become a water source for domestic consumption and production.
