The shrimp feed for 1000 lobsters costs 20 USD. Each household must have at least 3,000 USD to run a farm of 1000 lobsters.
“50% of lobsters have died. More and more lobsters are dying. We are struggling”, Farmer Huynh Thi Hoa – Xuan Canh Commune, Song Cau town, Phu Yen Provine – said.
The money from selling lobsters is usually saved for reinvestment. However, in lobster farming areas such as Hoa Loi commune, more than 300 households have become bankrupt after 300 thousand lobsters died from recent floods.
A lobster can be sold at 80 USD. During the past 2 months, the rate of lobster deaths is increasing.
“We need to stop the death rate of lobsters by curing sick lobsters and preventing the spread of diseases. We will also propose banks extend the payment time for farmers”, Huynh Le Tuan – Vice Chairman of Xuan Canh's People's Committee, Song Cau town, Phu Yen Province – said.
The situation in Song Cau town is similar to other lobster farming areas such as Cu Mong and Xuan Dai in Phu Yen province.
