Born in 1978, Vu Kim Thuy faced immense challenges from birth as her vision was limited to blurry outlines of large objects with contrasting colors. Over the years, her eyesight deteriorated and her childhood was marked by feelings of loneliness and insecurity as she withdrew from the teasing of her peers.
Fortunately, with the unwavering love of her family and her relentless determination, Thuy gradually overcame these barriers. Her parents went to great lengths to help her integrate into society. Long treatment journeys, sleepless nights, and countless tears became the driving force behind Thuy’s perseverance.
Her life changed when she discovered herpassion for running. Thuy’s running journey began with solitary steps. Despite her limited vision and the many challenges she faced on the track, she never gave up. She turned her passion for the sport into a source of life and an unstoppable force. “Nothing is impossible” became her mantra as she broke barriers and defied prejudice.
Thuy’s early running events demonstrated her unyielding determination. To achieve her goals, she trained tirelessly, braving harsh weather conditions and enduring injuries. Every step she took was soaked in sweat and tears. She encountered many accidents on her runs, from painful falls to permanent injuries. Yet, these challenges only forged her iron will. Those moments on the podium, cheered on by the crowd, were her greatest comfort and motivation to continue her journey. The support of the runner community and her beloved teammates also played an important role. For Thuy, every person who crosses her path is a precious gift.
The “Station of Love” program, themed “No Limits”, also features Vu Tien Manh, the first blind Vietnamese runner to complete a marathon and one of Kim Thuy’s closest friends. Tien Manh will share many stories about her relentless journey. For Manh, Thuy is not only a teammate but also a significant source of encouragement. Together, they have faced the toughest roads, shared countless training sessions, and connected deeply through life stories , and forged a lasting friendship.
Looking back on 10 years of marathon running, Vu Kim Thuy sees herself not only as stronger but also more mature in her outlook. Currently, she is actively involved in activities to support disabled athletes, spreading the spirit of “No Limits” to inspire many others. Despite the challenges that lie ahead, she continues to dream. “ I hope that one day, not only me but all people with disabilities can confidently stand on the podium of their success”, she said.
