VTV.vn - South Korea will suspend up to a quarter of its coal-fired power plants in the next three months as it seeks to tackle fine dust.

At least eight and as many as 15 will have operations suspended from this Sunday until Feb 29.

The remaining plants will reduce output to 80% of capacity over the period. It's expected that the measures would reduce the sector's fine dust production by up to 44%. Earlier this month, South Korea unveiled a set of measures to limit fine dust pollution. Fine dust, which can penetrate deep into the lungs, is a potential cause of respiratory diseases and cancer.
