US defense Secretary Ashton Carter spoke at the session, expressing the US’s views on regional security, especially in the East Sea.
During the speech, Secretary Ashton Carter stated that the main security challenges in Asia include maritime disputes, terrorism, nuclear issues in the Korean peninsula, and some other non-traditional security threats.
Regarding the East Sea issue, the Secretary stressed that the tensions in the region come from China’s widespread militarisation in the East Sea. The US also warns that China is isolating itself in this issue. To deal with these challenges, the US defense Secretary called all parties to respect international law and maintain maritime and aviation freedom in the region.
