VTV.vn - The modern writing system for the Vietnamese language is called the “Vietnamese Alphabet” (or Quoc Ngu in Vietnamese) and its role in Vietnamese culture was the topic of a scientific seminar in south central Phu Yen province on Saturday.

The event drew the participation of a number of scholars and experts from across the country, as well as professors, researchers, and students. Speeches at the seminar focused on the development of the Vietnamese Alphabet over the past 4 centuries, and how to preserve the authenticity of the Vietnamese language in its new context.

The Vietnamese alphabet uses the Latin script, based on its employment in the alphabets of Romance languages. Until the 17th century, the modern writing system of the Vietnamese language was written using variant Chinese characters, each of them representing one word.
