Rescued fighter pilot brought ashore

VTV.vn - Rescue forces are continuing to search for the co-pilot Senior Lieutenant Colonel Tran Quang Khai, deputy head and chief of staff of Regiment 923, and the missing aircraft.

Phan Văn Lê came across and rescued Major Nguyễn Hữu Cường at around 5 am on Wednesday. He was then picked up by the Ha Tinh Border Guard ship and taken to the shore.

"When I heard the cry for help, I grabbed a torch and began looking around. I saw a bright spot, which I thought was Cuong lighting a match to signal us. Then I told the crew to use the basket boat to rescue him." - Fisherman, Ha Tinh Province.

At 1.40pm Major Nguyen Huu Cuong was escorted ashore by te Ha Tinh Border Guard. Cường was reported to be in good health.

"Major Cường’s health is stable now and we’re still doing some checks. Through the information Cường provided, we know that there were problems with the flight, which led to the crew ejecting." - Senior Lieutenant General Vo Van Tuan, Deputy Chief, General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army.

The Ministry of Defence and the People’s Committee of Nghệ An praised the fishing boat crew. The search and rescue crews will continue searching for the still missing co-pilot.

"The search for the missing co-pilot has been expanded to cover the sea off the coast of Thái Bình. Fishermen are asked to maintain watches to help in searching for the downed co-pilot." - Senior Lieutenant General Vo Van Tuan, Deputy Chief, General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army.

19 military vessels, 5 air craft and 80 fishing vessels are currently involved in the search for the missing airman and plane.
